Want to save yourself some money, save the planet from more throwaway plastic and have some fun? Try these homemade powder and liquid foundation recipes!

Creating homemade foundation is not an exact science. It will actually require you to experiment in order to get the right tone/colour for your skin. It will require a little patience considering the various aspects that go into making the foundation for your skin type, colour, and preferences.

Powder Foundation

The idea behind creating a powder foundation is to design it so that it looks natural, not caked on and does not make your skin appear dry. You must always use a coffee grinder to grind your powders and make them fine enough for application purposes. Since we are working with natural products, the application process can be a little different than what we are normally used to. The powdered foundations tend to get a little messy. Be sure to apply your makeup before getting dressed or cover yourself with a towel.

All Natural Powder with Arrowroot or Cornstarch

You will need arrowroot or cornstarch powder for our powder foundation recipes. Arrowroot and cornstarch are ingredients that you will run into often with DIY makeup recipes. Arrowroot is a white powder made from a plant. It is added to moisturisers as a thickening agent and to activate the ingredients in order for them to penetrate the skin. Cornstarch (also a white powder) is finely ground corn flour often used as a thickener in cooking. Throughout these recipes, we recommend using arrowroot rather than cornstarch because more and more people tend to have sensitivities to corn. You’ll also need one, some, or all of the ingredients from the following list:

  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Cocoa Powder
  • Ground Ginger
  • Rice Bran Powder
  • Green Clay

These ingredients determine the colour of the powder foundation that you will choose according to your skin type. You might even need to mix some of them together. If you add too much, you can add in more of your white powder (arrowroot or cornstarch).
